Biomedical science — oncovirology

Dr. Julio César Osorio Patiño, PhD

PhD in Biomedical Sciences · Head of the Department of Basic Sciences — UNICOC, Cali

I study how oncogenic viruses —HPV and MMTV-like viruses— take part in cancer development, from tissue to biomarker.

Oncovirus

The viruses that can cause cancer — and can be prevented

An oncovirus is a virus capable of triggering cancer. IARC-WHO recognizes HPV, Epstein-Barr virus, the hepatitis B and C viruses, HTLV-1, KSHV (HHV-8) and Merkel cell polyomavirus as human carcinogens. Knowing them is the first step to preventing and detecting them in time.
